4 Cylinder and Cylinder Wars
One neat thing that I have been able to discover so far has to do with the size of the cylinder of the automobile. From what I've been able to know, the original automobiles began with 8 cylinder mothers, sort of like twin 4's, however what I didn't not know what that as early as 1908, there were 4 cylinder motors! These motors were accompanied by very low horsepower and the earliest versions of automatic transmissions. The transmissions where in place to help save on the price of the automobile by saving on the price to manufacture. This is great! So even before environmental factors are a major deal, manufacturers are still making advances that effect the environment in order to save people money. The only question: does this money saving version of an automobile give environmentally efficient features a lack of luxury?
Another thing that happened back in the early 1900's was the cylinder wars. This is interesting because it was brought about by the depression caused by the World War. This is when manufacturers began building 12 cylinder, and 16 cylinder engines! 16 cylinders, now that's a low of power! Those cars were 175 horsepower and built to pull other large cars with low vibration, heavy torque and no concerns about performance. Some of these were Cadillac. Now how does THAT look for the desire of environmental features?

Electric Automobile
Can you believe that the first attempt at the electric automobile actually came about in 1896, and was actually experimented on in 1908 by the Pope Manufacturing Company? Matter of fact, the efforts in those early days towards the Electric Automobile did not end until 1911, and was then reintroduced in later years. Once again, these efforts were more about cost efficiency then environmental efficiency.
